Exciting opportunity for African scholars! The University of Pretoria is now accepting applications for its 2025 LLM Scholarship in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa — a fully funded initiative that supports graduate study in South Africa and across the continent.
Successful applicants will receive a comprehensive scholarship valued at $15,000, which includes tuition, housing, and costs related to official programme activities. This programme is designed for outstanding candidates committed to advancing human rights in Africa.
Scholarship Overview:This highly regarded one-year programme brings together 25–30 top students to spend six months in Pretoria and another six months at a partner university in Africa. It prepares graduates to contribute meaningfully to human rights advancement across the continent, with many alumni active in NGOs, government, and international institutions like the UN and AU.
Graduates also join the prestigious HRDA Alumni Association, a network of over 500 professionals working in diverse human rights sectors.

Who Can Apply?To be eligible for this scholarship, applicants must:
- Be nationals of any African country
- Receive an invitation to apply for the LLM/MPhil in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa at the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria
- Hold a degree in Law (LLB, licence en droit, or licenciatura em direito) or a related Honours degree
- Demonstrate strong academic and professional interest in human rights, potential to apply knowledge in their home country, and meet diversity goals (geographic, gender, and vulnerable group inclusion)
Applications must be submitted through the programme’s official portal. Applicants should:
- Prepare academic transcripts, previous degrees, passport bio page, and a recent photo
- Provide English language test scores if their previous education was not in English (TOEFL, IELTS, etc.)
- Apply online, after which shortlisted candidates will complete an essay, video, or audio task within a tight deadline
The final selection is made by the Admissions Committee, and all candidates will be informed of their outcome by September 30, 2025.
