James Johnson Steps Down as Football Australia CEO Ahead of Crucial Tournament Season

Football Australia has entered a leadership transition at a pivotal moment, as CEO James Johnson officially stepped down with major international competitions on the horizon for both the Matildas and Socceroos.

Johnson, who announced his resignation during a board meeting on Thursday, concluded a tenure that spanned five and a half years and included significant milestones for the sport in the country. “While this wasn’t an easy choice, I believe it’s the right time to step aside,” he said, reaffirming his passion for Australian football.

The announcement comes as Australia readies itself to host the 2026 Women’s Asian Cup in March and prepares for next year’s men’s World Cup. The departure leaves Football Australia under pressure to find a new permanent leader with less than a year before these critical events.

Former Matildas star and FA board director Heather Garriock has been appointed interim CEO while the search for a long-term successor gets underway.

Johnson joined Football Australia in 2020 after roles with the Asian Football Confederation and City Football Group. His term is widely regarded as one of the sport’s most successful periods. Under his leadership, FA hired Tony Gustavsson to lead the Matildas, retained Socceroos coach Graham Arnold after the 2022 World Cup, and navigated the organization through the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic.

He also played a central role in securing the 2023 Women’s World Cup co-hosting rights and initiated the long-anticipated second division—the Australian Championship—set to launch later this year.

Describing his time in charge as a "privilege," Johnson thanked the board and the wider football community. “No matter where I go, my support for Football Australia remains unwavering,” he said.

At the board’s request, Johnson will assist with ongoing projects and help ensure a seamless transition alongside Garriock.
